It's actually not about me, but my brother. Last week he joined the Gracie MMA team in Dallas. Bastard's learning Brazilan Jujitsu with some of the best as we speak.

Nice, I've gotta buddy out my way thats been part of the SF branch domo for years...He's shown me a few of the moves, very useful for setting yourself up to deliver more traditional punishment, or to incapacitate someone...

Is he looking to compete, or just expanding his fighting knowledge? (my buddy decided to pick it up because he's a warrant server, wanted to expand his ability to protect himself)

Gracie style Ju-Jitzu seems to be all about taking the intiative and disipline, which by themselves are traits that will usually keep you on-top in a street situation. However, one drawback is that its very focused on one-on-one, if your outnumbered, it doesnt seem that it would work well, unless you used the most brutal incapacitatoion techniques early and flawlessly... I'm just a novice though, but that was my, and my friends impression...

What he really wants to do is be a UFC trainer but he has to compete to get there. That causes the competing to be a sort-of a means to and end I suppose, but since he enjoys the sport immensely it should be fun for him.

I fought in the Amateur league here in Tulsa for about 2 years or so for Mikey's Gym. Fought usually with our team at eXtreme fighting (Dale 'Apollo' Cook owned) at Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa. I keep promising myself I'll get back into it after college so hopefully it'll happen. I've trained in Muay Thai for over 5 years and BJJ for 2 of those 5 years. Been into this since I was a small fry.

BJJ is absolutely amazing. Your friend will not be disappointed. It's my most highly recommended styles for ground work and submission grappling. Love me some Team Gracie. Good luck to your bro!

Good luck to him.

He'd be better if he did some multi-discipline training like Orphen did, I think the gracie stuff is only OK and find the aikido stuff better

There is just something incredibly gay about wrapping your legs around another dude to go into the 'guard' position that says, PLEASE STOMP MY FACE NOW! lol

Very cool. Our Sesei trains under someone (Gene Dunn) that learned directly from Henzo Gracie back in the day. It is an awesome art to compliment a good stand up game. People that make fun of guard, have never been caught in someones guard that knows WTF their doing :P Oh and Lugh, it's only gay if you make eye contact lol In fact, about any video of a competent BJJ practitioner vs X style, BJJ almost always comes out on top. Especially if there is no ground work in the others skill set, they just don't have the tools to deal with it.

You won't see me in the ring, but there has been a handful people from our Dojo that started up in local cage fights. Team Karoshi has been pretty successful for just getting serious over the last year. It's cool to watch people you train with every week go out and beat some whole sale ass :D

Starting up Martial Arts is no questions asked, THE best thing I have done in my life. Would not trade what I have learned about myself and life from it for anything else in the world. Your brother should love it, I very highly recommend everyone go give it a try at least once. Especially women, the stuff learned in BJJ and other arts that rely on leverage and technique and not brute force could be priceless in an altercation. Don't get sucked into a McDojo though, do your research.

Man, that is friggin' hilarious.

A little more info...
I kinda gave a misquote earlier. My brother's not training with the Gracies themselves, but pretty much the next best thing... their friggin' cousin Carlos Machado. The same guy that taught BJJ to Chuck Norris - lol. But Machado was taught by Carlos Gracie, and trained with like all the friggin' Gracies. I'm prolly preachin' to the choir here - I'm sure most of you know exactly who Machado is. I freaked out when he told me that. I think he held like two different weight division World Master's Championships belts at the same time back a few years ago.

But anyway, just like you guys were mentioning about the multiple discipline training, Machado's got him training not only BJJ but also Kickboxing and Judo. He's pumped. He said he's ready to fight right now - lol. The instructors already have him helping out some of the "new guys," so that's pretty exciting.

I was just talking to him today before he headed to his MMA class and he said the other day Elvis Sinosic, who's going down to Australia to fight this weekend in UFC 110, was in the gym also training with Machado.
